We are The Next Chapter Counseling, a practice serving McKinney, Frisco, Prosper, and Plano families with over 20 years of combined experience working with children, adolescents, and the parents who love them. We are licensed professional counselors who genuinely love this work, and if you have ever wanted therapy to feel less like a clinical transaction and more like talking to a really wise, warm friend, you are in the right place.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

- Jeremiah 29:11

When Your Child Is Struggling

Parenting a hurting child is hard. You may have Googled symptoms, read the books, and still feel like you are missing something. That feeling makes complete sense.

Children often cannot name what they are feeling, not because they will not, but because their brains are not wired for it yet. A five-year-old melting down before school may be experiencing anxiety with no words attached. A ten-year-old withdrawing after a move or loss may be carrying grief they do not know how to express.

Without support, these patterns can harden into disorders that are much harder to treat later. Early intervention in child therapy is not a last resort. It is one of the most effective decisions a parent can make.

How Child Therapy Works

Child therapy uses play, art, movement, and storytelling to help kids process their inner world in ways that feel natural to them. Play therapy is one of the most well-researched approaches for children under 12. In these sessions, the therapeutic environment becomes the language.

A clinical therapist observes how a child engages, identifies emotional patterns, and gently guides them toward healthier ways of coping. This is not free playtime. It is clinically intentional work built on child development, attachment theory, and trauma-informed care.

About The Next Chapter Counseling

The Next Chapter Counseling was founded by Emily Pennington, MMFT, LMFT-S, a licensed therapist supervisor based in McKinney, Texas. Emily started the practice because she believed therapy could be something different, less clinical, less intimidating, and a lot more human. Our team shares that same belief, and we have built a space that reflects it in every way, from the way we work with clients to the office chocolates waiting when you walk in.

Meet Our Team

Our Approach:

Warm, Faith-Rooted, Anything But Freudian

Picture a therapy office with office chocolates on the table, a therapy dog named Darcy who has been showing up for clients for five years, and a framed portrait of that same dog dressed as an English Duchess, painted by a former client. That is genuinely what you are walking into here.

We are a Christian counseling practice, and faith is something we weave into the work for those who want it, not a lens we force on anyone. If your family values having your beliefs honored in a therapy room, you will feel that here.

Show up as you are. No perfect vocabulary required.

Getting Started Is Simpler Than You Think

Starting therapy can feel like a big, overwhelming step. It does not have to be. Here is all it takes.

Step 1: Reach Out

Call us, email us, or book online. You do not need to have the right words ready or know exactly what you need. Just tell us a little about what is going on and we will handle the rest.

Step 2: We Find Your Fit

We will match you with the right counselor based on what you are dealing with, your schedule, and honestly, just who you think you would click with. If you are not sure, we will help you figure it out.

Step 3: Show Up

That is genuinely it. Come in, meet your counselor, and have a real conversation. No pressure, no performance, no having it together before you walk through the door. The first session is just about getting to know each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Children can start therapy as young as 4 years old. For very young children, child therapy often involves parents directly in the process, helping caregivers understand and respond to their child's emotional needs.

  • Child therapy costs vary by therapist. Please reachout for costs and pricings.

  • How long child therapy takes depends on your child's specific needs. Some children see meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions, while others benefit from a longer therapeutic relationship. Your child's LPC will discuss realistic timelines after an initial assessment.

  • Child therapy treats a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, grief, behavioral challenges, autism spectrum support, school refusal, social difficulties, and the emotional weight of major life transitions.

  • Parents do participate in child therapy, and their involvement is an important part of the process. Younger children often have parents present in session, while older kids and teens receive more private session time with periodic parent check-ins to track progress.
